HISTORICAL ORIGIN
The Verplanck chair is inspired by an American-made sofa (ca. 1785) on display in the Met’s Verplanck Room, a pre-Revolutionary room in the museum’s American Wing. Designed to seat multiple people, these sofas, with their high backs and low arms, embody the refined social customs of the era. The original sofa is part of the only remaining set of 18th-century furniture from New York City that once belonged to the influential Verplanck family.
